The FAN5665 Saves 20 Percent Board Space in Portable Applications

San Jose, California – December 27, 2007 – Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) brings designers an ultra-small boost converter solution for their space-constrained mobile and ultra-portable devices. The FAN5665 is a high efficiency 5V/30mA adaptive charge pump boost converter packaged in a low profile, compact 1.21mm X 1.21mm WL-CSP package, saving over 20 percent board space compared to alternate solutions. For USB enabled devices needing a 5V I/O rail, Fairchild’s FAN5665 provides an optimal “quick fix” solution. The FAN5665 can also be used to drive keypad LEDs in portable devices. This boost converter features a low 0.625mm (max) profile and does not require a bulky inductor, offering a slim solution for network cards or other thin portable applications.

Through the use of switch reconfiguration and fractional switching techniques, the FAN5665 achieves up to 92 percent efficiency and can support an input voltage range of 2.9V to 5.5V. Low impedance 30V-40V MOSFETs lower power dissipation and improve efficiency for high power automotive systems

The FXL2TD245 in MicroPak™ offers unique design flexibility while dramatically reducing board space in low-voltage designs

National’s PowerWise ADC Consumes 30 Percent Less Power than Competitive Devices

National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced the availability of the industry’s first high-speed, continuous-time sigma-delta(1) (CTSD) analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The ADC12EU050, a member of National’s PowerWise® energy-efficient family, is an 8-channel, 12-bit, 50 mega-samples per second (MSPS) ADC that offers an alias-free sample bandwidth up to 25 MHz, while consuming 30 percent less power (350 mW) than competing pipeline devices. This low-power breakthrough enables manufacturers to extend battery life and reduce heat in portable medical ultrasound and industrial imaging equipment.

CTSD technology has been the subject of university and industry research for more than 15 years. With the introduction of the ADC12EU050, National is the first manufacturer to successfully transition CTSD technology from the research lab to the production line. National plans to expand its CTSD ADC product offering for imaging, communications, and test and measurement applications that require high dynamic performance at extremely low power. The continuous-time architecture greatly simplifies system design as it allows the integration of other signal-path functions, such as signal conditioning, while incorporating anti-aliasing filtering into the ADC. 

The ADC12EU050’s innovative CTSD architecture offers many advantages compared to traditional pipeline architectures:

Operating from a 1.2V supply, it consumes 44 mW per channel at 50 MSPS for a total power consumption of only 350 mW. January 21, 2008 – A new buffer from National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) delivers the industry’s lowest noise and harmonic distortion for professional audio applications. Part of National’s high-fidelity LME™ audio amplifier family, the LME49600 produces the necessary output current to drive multiple low-impedance headphones and the voltage swing to drive several high-impedance headphones. Additionally, the buffer is well-suited for a wide range of other applications, including line drivers, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) input drivers, low-noise and wide-frequency voltage regulators, and it can also drive the headphone amplifier output stage in mixer consoles as well as capacitive loads in low-power audio amplifiers.

The LME49600’s high-fidelity specifications ensure that it can respond to highly dynamic inputs, accurately reproducing these signals without degrading them by adding distortion. The device delivers 180 MHz bandwidth, a high slew rate of 2000 V/us and has 2.6 nV/rtHz input referred voltage noise density. In a closed-loop configuration with National’s LME49710 single operational amplifier (op amp), the total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) is a vanishingly low 0.00003 percent. Combining the LME49600’s +/- 250 mA output current capacity with the LME49710 and an LM4040 low-noise bandgap reference produces a very high-performance, low-noise, wide-bandwidth, audiophile quality, voltage regulator.

National engineers developed the LME49600 using the company’s proprietary VIP3 process technology. The high-voltage, high-performance, complementary bipolar technology, with vertically integrated NPN and PNP transistors, enables larger peak-to-peak output voltage swings that are well-suited for high-voltage requirements in high-end audio applications.
 
Key Technical Features – LME49600 High-Current Audio Buffer
The LME49600 is a high-performance, low-distortion, high-fidelity audio headphone buffer that can continuously source or sink 250 mA. Designed for use inside an op amp’s feedback loop, it increases output current, improves capacitive load drive and eliminates thermal feedback. The LME49600 offers pin-selectable bandwidth, including a low current, 110 MHz bandwidth-mode that consumes 8 mA and a wide 180 MHz bandwidth-mode that consumes 15 mA. In both modes, the LME49600 has a nominal 2000 V/us slew rate. Bandwidth is easily adjusted by either leaving the bandwidth-control pin unconnected or connecting a resistor between the bandwidth pin and the emitter voltage pin. The LME49600 is fully protected through internal current limit and a thermal shutdown that activates when the junction temperature exceeds 150 degrees C.

Highly-Integrated LME Devices Reduce Design Time, Enable Audio Power Amplifier Designs with Remarkably Low 0.00035 Percent Distortion Rate

– National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) today extended its high-fidelity LME™ audio amplifier family with the introduction of a pair of 200V mono audio power amplifier input stages that deliver industry-leading low distortion performance and reduce design time. These highly-integrated, single-chip devices accelerate the design of high-end consumer and professional audio applications that span powered studio monitors and subwoofers, audio/visual (AV) receivers, commercial sound reinforcement, automotive after-market audio, professional mixers, distributed audio and guitar amplifiers. They also address a wide range of industrial applications where high-voltage and low-distortion are required.

The LME49811 and LME49830 offer scalable output power based on supply voltage and output device count. With these devices, designers can use the same base circuit design to create multiple power-level solutions up to 1 kW amplifiers, just by scaling the output stage devices to accommodate for more power dissipation and current drive. When implemented in a complete power amplifier design, the LME49811’s total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) is a remarkably low 0.00035 percent, while the LME49830’s THD+N is 0.0006 percent.

The LME49811 and LME49830 contain all the essential circuitry required for a high-quality, high-performance power amplifier input stage. They save board space and design time by replacing more than 25 discrete components (many of which must be hand selected and matched by the audio system designer) in high-power audio amplifiers. This enables designs with more channels and more power per square-inch of chassis space. These devices also provide designers more time to differentiate their output stage and power supply design, as well as “tune” the amplifier’s overall sound.

National’s power amplifier input stages have achieved a new benchmark in integrated circuitry by enabling audio designers to easily create high-power systems, where previously only discrete designs could achieve this level of power and performance.

Key Technical Features – 200V Power Amplifier Input Stages
The LME49811 drives Darlington or bipolar power transistors in an amplifier’s output stage. It is a mono version of the LM4702 stereo driver, National’s first power amplifier input stage for the high-performance audio market. The LME49811 is capable of driving an output stage to deliver in excess of 500W single-ended into an 8-Ohm load. The device can easily attain slew rates of 40V/us, while providing 9 mA output drive current and 100 microvolts output voltage noise. The LME49811 also provides a wide operating voltage range of plus or minus 20V to plus or minus 100V, and its power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) is 115 dB.

The LME49830 is optimized to drive a wide range of MOSFETs with standard and low threshold voltages. It can drive an output stage in excess of 500W single-ended into an 8-Ohm load. The device’s 60 mA output current capability increases design flexibility when selecting output stage configurations. The LME49830 provides slew rates of 40V/us, PSRR of 115 dB, output voltage noise of 41 microvolts and a wide operating voltage range of plus or minus 20V to plus or minus 100V.

The LME49811 and LME49830 are both protected by a thermal shutdown feature. National engineers developed these devices using the company’s proprietary VIP3 process technology. The high-voltage, high-performance, complementary bipolar technology, with vertically integrated NPN and PNP transistors, enables larger peak-to-peak output voltage swings that are well-suited for high-voltage requirements in high-end audio applications.

New Switch-Mode Regulator Features Ultra-Wide Input Voltage Range from 4.25V to 75V

National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today introduced the industry’s first high-voltage, monolithic two-switch forward DC-DC regulator for power supply designs in telecommunication, automotive and industrial applications.  The highly integrated LM5015 features an ultra-wide input voltage range from 4.25V to 75V and maximum switching frequency to 750 kHz.  The LM5015 enables easy implementation of either isolated or non-isolated DC-DC converters using a minimum of external components. 

Offered in a small TSSOP package, the LM5015 integrates two 75V N-Channel MOSFET switches for a reduced system component count and very small solution size.  The two-switch forward architecture reduces system losses and noise.  The LM5015 joins National’s high-voltage DC-DC regulator product line which includes the LM5001 and LM5002 high-voltage switch-mode regulators.

Key Features and Benefits
The LM5015 high-voltage switch-mode regulator features all of the functions necessary to implement efficient two-switch forward and two-switch flyback power converters with a minimum of external components.  The easy-to-use regulator integrates high-side and low-side 75V N-Channel MOSFETs with a minimum 1A peak current limit.  The voltage across the MOSFETs employed in the two-switch topology is clamped to the input voltage, allowing the input voltage range to approach the rating of the MOSFETs.  The regulator control method is based on current-mode control, providing inherent ease-of-loop compensation and line feed-forward for superior rejection of input transients.

The operating frequency of the LM5015 is set with a single resistor and is programmable up to 750 kHz.  The oscillator can also be synchronized to an external clock.  Additional protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout and remote shutdown capability.  The LM5015 is offered in a 14-pin TSSOP package featuring an exposed die attach pad to enhance thermal dissipation.

New Crosspoints from National’s PowerWise Energy-Efficient Product Family Consume Less Than 125 mW per Channel, with Jitter Performance as Low as 6 ps at Data Rates up to 3.125 Gbps

– National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today added two low-power, low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) 2 x 2 crosspoint switches to its PowerWise® energy-efficient product family. The DS25CP102 delivers the industry’s best jitter performance (6 ps typical) at data transmission rates up to 3.125 Gbps, while consuming only 125 mW of power per channel. The device features selectable transmit pre-emphasis and receive equalization to extend signal transmission reach in cables and FR-4 backplanes. The lower-speed (1.5 Gbps) DS10CP152 addresses short-haul applications that do not require signal conditioning. It delivers excellent jitter performance (9 ps typical), with very low power consumption of 57 mW per channel.

The DS25CP102 and DS10CP152 work as splitters or multiplexers for high-speed signal routing and switching in OC-48 telecom as well as standard-definition (SD), high-definition (HD) and 3-Gbps serial digital interface (SDI) professional video applications. They are also used in video and imaging transport applications to select between two data streams or as a splitter to drive two monitors. Their superior jitter and signal conditioning performance allow OEMs to use less costly cable, connectors and components. National built these 2 x 2 crosspoint switches with its proprietary silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS-8 process technology, which provides the highest performance-to-power ratios for high-speed interface devices.

National’s 2x2 crosspoints offer pin-selectable signal-conditioning features to reduce data-dependent jitter and eliminate the need for repeaters to extend signal transmission reach. Their inputs have a wide common-mode voltage range that allow the crosspoints to accept low-voltage positive-emitter-coupled logic (LVPECL), current-mode logic (CML) and LVDS signal levels without using coupling capacitors. The DS25CP102 and DS10CP152 accept signals directly from the leading 90 nm and 65 nm field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). They feature 8 kV electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and 100-Ohm termination on the LVDS input and output pins to minimize insertion losses, component count and board space.
 
These devices are the latest additions to National’s growing family of crosspoint switches, which include the recently announced DS25CP104 and DS10CP154 LVDS 4x4 crosspoints.
